Nancy van den Boom

— Dutch Oil Painter

My name is Nancy van den Boom and I live in the Netherlands, close to the exciting city of Amsterdam and the North sea. I have painted every day passionately since 2004, with wonderful oil color paint on canvas or linen. I discovered by accident that painting with oil paint is what I love to do so very much. I am so glad I did discover this!

In my paintings, I can fully express my love for the subjects in the oil paint. I choose for the essence and feeling of the moment and the subject, not for a very detailed painting. I like to take the viewer into the painting. I want to share my art and enjoy when people enjoy my work to brighten up a space or when it evokes emotions. To connect trough my paintings is what I really love.

I often go out to paint. The inspiration around my hometown Uitgeest – a small village – is great. Lots of space and places to paint. Bridges, scenery, cloudy skies, meadows, cows, horses, fields, trees! Sometimes I go a little further from home (other provinces or Germany) to paint outdoors. A painting made outside is kind of a snapshot. Once home, I do not work on it anymore, to preserve the spontaneous feeling. So it is really an impression of the moment and I think this is more important than painting detailed and “finish” the painting. My heart is in every picture I create.

I also like to paint in my studio, at home. Especially working with larger paintings, about 40 x 40 inches or bigger is wonderful. In the studio I can put more hours in to a painting which is ideal for commissions. Still I think, there should always be something to discover in the painting.

I have no painting or art-education, I am self-taught. By painting every day I learned a lot and also by looking at the old painting masters. As a kid I saw my father draw and paint. Later my mother explored water coloring with all her heart…. so stepping into my parent’s footsteps took some time but at the age of 41 I finally did. In early 2015, I had a few months of on-line private lessons from an American art teacher, Dr. Karol M. Thompson. From her I learned a lot. Especially learn to look good. Now I mix my own style with what I learned. As a painter it made me richer.

I choose good quality oil paints because it helps me so much to express myself and of course it has a great influence on the result – the painting. My canvases are stretched by my husband Cor. Upon request, he can provide any canvas size. I use a favorite set of brushes (about 3) that I take with me everywhere. If I paint outside, my dog Jacky sits by my side, regardless if I paint 2 or 3 hours. He is very interested in what is happening around us. Often people come to me and watch me painting. Painting outside is a great way to meet people. We talk about the subject of my painting, the scenery and of course about the weather. Sometimes it’s cold and people are interested about the circumstances for me to paint. I then tell them that there is nothing more exciting than painting outdoors on a beautiful, cold day in a beautiful place.
